Using AI with confidence in qualitative research

A practical, evidence-informed workshop to help you decide when, where and how to use AI in your research.

View dates and book →
Best suited for

Qualitative researchers who are using or considering using AI and want practical guidance for making decisions about its role in their research.

What you'll gain

  • A practical framework for deciding whether and how to use AI for different research tasks
  • Greater clarity about where AI can appropriately support your work — and where you may want to retain researcher judgement
  • A way to evaluate AI use in relation to your methodology and research approach
  • Practical experience working through realistic AI decisions
  • Opportunities to apply the process to questions arising in your own research
  • A process for checking, explaining and documenting the AI decisions you make

What we'll explore

We'll work with practical questions such as:

  • Can I use AI to support coding or analysis?
  • What about summarising transcripts or research material?
  • Can AI support literature work, writing or editing?
  • When is AI assisting my work — and when is it beginning to shape the research?
  • How does my methodology affect what is appropriate?
  • If I decide to use AI, how do I work with it deliberately and critically?
  • What should I check rather than simply accept from AI?
  • What do I need to document or disclose?

Using realistic qualitative research scenarios, we'll explore these questions through the AI Defensibility Framework and then apply the process to AI uses and decisions arising in your own research.

The workshop draws on published research, current guidance and methodological scholarship, while remaining firmly focused on the practical decisions researchers are facing now.

What's included

  • 3 hours of live, interactive online training
  • AI Defensibility Framework
  • Practical exercises and realistic research scenarios
  • Application to your own research

Frequently asked questions

No. There isn't one answer that applies across all qualitative research. We'll focus on how you can make informed decisions about particular AI uses in the context of your research approach, the task you're undertaking and the role AI is being given.

The workshop is practically focused, with exercises, realistic research scenarios and opportunities to apply the framework to your own research. Where appropriate, we'll also consider how to work with AI more deliberately once you've decided that a particular use is appropriate.

Yes. We'll use concrete examples of the kinds of AI decisions qualitative researchers are encountering, including uses associated with analysis, research materials and writing. The focus is on developing a process you can apply across different tasks rather than prescribing a single approach.

No. You may already be using AI, be considering using it, or be trying to decide where you don't want to use it. All of those positions are appropriate for the workshop.

No. This isn't technical AI training. The focus is on using your expertise as a researcher to make better decisions about AI in your research.

The workshop is designed to work across qualitative approaches. Importantly, it doesn't assume that the same AI use will be appropriate across all methodologies. We'll explicitly consider how methodological and epistemological commitments affect the decisions you make.

Yes. The workshop is evidence-informed and draws on published research, current publisher and journal guidance, and methodological scholarship. The framework helps you bring that information together with the particular context of your own research.

You'll leave with the AI Defensibility Framework, practical resources and experience applying a structured decision-making process that you can return to as new AI questions arise in your research.

Yes. Participants who complete the live workshop receive a certificate of completion.

Exclusive delivery

This workshop is also available for exclusive delivery to schools, faculties, research groups and organisations, online or face-to-face. For dedicated delivery to your group, contact claire@thequalitativeresearchinstitute.com.
